Training a First Peoples Ranger Unit

Our team is dedicated to training the next generation of First Peoples Rangers. New trainees work with their manager to develop a personalised learning plan, that highlights each person’s specific interests and experience.

They all take part in a three-step training program to build knowledge and skills.
This includes a Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management which combines:

  • classroom and online training
  • practical on-Country experience
  • Traditional Ecological Knowledge.

All rangers are mentored by their manager and peers. They attend workshops and seminars, visit other sites and receive certifications (including First Aid and CPR). Weekly meetings ensure everyone stays connected and informed. The program gives rangers skills, experience and knowledge for a meaningful career in conservation, land management and cultural site protection.

During their training, rangers learn how to :

  • identify and manage wildlife (animals, birds, reptiles) and trees and plants
  • monitor illegal dumping
  • manage the land
  • protect and manage cultural sites
  • practise culture burning
  • work with the local community, Elders and partners
  • deepen Traditional Ecological Knowledge
  • engage with the wider community through visitor experiences.
